Over eight days, the journey passes viewpoints for eight 8,000-metre peaks, reaches Everest Base Camp, descends into the green Gyirong Gorge and explores places that most visitors to Tibet never reach.

Gyirong Gorge
Descend dramatically from the high Tibetan Plateau into pine forests, waterfalls and green Himalayan valleys near the Nepal border.
Roads Almost Nobody Drives
Much of this route travels through remote Himalayan border landscapes, far away from the standard tourist circuit.

Suggested Itinerary
Eight days along the frontier
Day 1 — Arrive in Lhasa
Arrive in Lhasa and transfer from the airport or railway station. Rest and begin acclimatising at approximately 3,650 metres.
Day 2 — Lhasa → Rilu La → Puma Yumco
Leave Lhasa and drive southwest into the high plateau. Visit Rilu La viewpoint and Puma Yumco. Stay overnight in a stargazing tent near Xuemu Lake at approximately 5,000 metres.
Day 3 — Chongba Yumco → Duina Lakes → Gamba
Watch sunrise over Chongba Yumco. Continue past Duoqing Tso and Chomolhari before visiting the remote Duina lakes. Reach Gamba for views of Kangchenjunga. Overnight at approximately 4,700 metres.
Day 4 — Gamba → Himalayan Viewpoints → Everest Base Camp
Travel through remote Himalayan landscapes with views of Lhotse and Makalu. Continue to Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,200 metres. Descend to Everest Town for the night.
Day 5 — Everest → Cho Oyu → Peiku Tso → Gyirong
Travel west through Himalayan passes with views of Cho Oyu, Manaslu and Annapurna. Visit Peiku Tso with views of Shishapangma, then descend from the Tibetan Plateau into the dramatically greener Gyirong Gorge.
Day 6 — Gyirong Gorge → Saga
Explore the Gyirong escarpment before climbing back onto the plateau toward Saga.
Day 7 — Saga → King Peak → Lhatse
Travel through remote mountain landscapes and visit the King Peak area before continuing east toward Lhatse.
Day 8 — Tashilhunpo Monastery → Lhasa
Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse before returning to Lhasa.
Before You Go
Travel Permits
Foreign travellers cannot travel independently in Tibet.
This itinerary also passes through several border counties, so additional travel permits are required beyond the standard Tibet Travel Permit.
Required permits are arranged as part of the trip, but travellers need to provide passport and visa information well in advance.
Travellers must remain with a licensed guide throughout the journey.

- This is a serious high-altitude journey.
- Several nights are spent above 4,000 metres.
- The second night is at approximately 5,000 metres.
- This itinerary is better suited to travellers who are comfortable with remote travel and high-altitude environments.
- Accommodation in remote areas may be simpler than in Lhasa.
- Weather, road conditions and permit checkpoints may require itinerary adjustments.
- Views of mountain summits are weather-dependent and cannot be guaranteed.
- Warm clothing is essential, even in summer.
- Travellers should allow enough time for permits to be arranged before departure.
