How to Get a Temporary Driving Licence & Rent a Car in China
Foreign driving licences are not directly valid in mainland China. This guide explains how temporary driving permits work, what documents you need and how to rent a car legally.
01
Why you need a Chinese permit
An international driving permit or overseas licence on its own is not valid for driving in mainland China. Eligible short-term visitors may be able to apply for a temporary Chinese driving permit, subject to local rules.
02
Documents you may need
Requirements vary by issuing office and can change. Confirm the exact list for the city where you plan to apply before making non-refundable arrangements.
- Passport and valid visa or entry record
- Valid overseas driving licence
- Approved Chinese translation of your licence
- Temporary residence registration where required
- Passport-style photographs and a health declaration or check where required
03
Renting a car
Not every rental company accepts a temporary permit, foreign payment card or one-way route. Confirm eligibility, deposit, insurance, mileage, border restrictions and roadside support in writing before paying.
04
On the road
Road signs on major routes are generally clear, but local traffic habits, parking systems and app-based toll or charging services may be unfamiliar. Avoid building an ambitious first driving day immediately after collecting the vehicle.
Questions
What travellers usually ask
Can I use an International Driving Permit in China?
No. Mainland China does not recognise an IDP by itself. You need the appropriate Chinese driving permit before driving.
Can every visitor get a temporary permit?
Eligibility and procedure depend on your documents, visa or entry status and the local issuing authority. Confirm the current requirements for your application city.
