The apps that make travelling in China easier — from maps and transport to payments, food delivery, trains and communication.

Download the essentials early
Install and sign in to important apps before departure. Some registrations require a text message, identity check or linked payment card, and these are easier to resolve while you still have access to your usual number and bank.
- Alipay and WeChat for payments
- Trip.com or Railway 12306 for trains
- Amap (高德地图) for navigation in China
- Didi for taxis
- Doubao or Qianwen for translation

Maps and addresses
In mainland China, Amap (高德地图) usually gives the most accurate local routes, bus stops and walking directions. Save the Chinese name and address of your hotel and key places, not only the English version. Screenshots are useful when reception is weak.

Transport and tickets
Didi can simplify taxi journeys because the destination is entered in the app. For rail, use a platform that accepts passport details and shows the exact station; large cities often have several stations far apart.

Communication
Keep Chinese names and addresses saved as text so you can show or copy them. AI apps like Doubao (豆包) or Tongyi Qianwen (通义千问) handle conversation and menu translation well and often work offline for short phrases. You can also open the camera inside the app and point it at a menu or sign to get an instant translation. Automatic translations can miss context, so keep key phrases checked by a local if possible.

Do I need a Chinese phone number?
Not for every app, but a local number can make bookings, deliveries and contact with drivers easier. Check each service’s current registration options.
Which map app should I use in mainland China?
Amap (高德地图) is the most useful choice for local navigation. Google Maps and Apple Maps are less reliable for detailed directions, public transport and small streets inside China.
