Yunnan

Yunnan sits in China's far southwest, pressed against Tibet, Sichuan, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam. Its elevation drops from Himalayan fringes in the north to tropical jungle in the south, so you can see alpine meadows and banana palms on the same trip.
It's also one of China's most culturally diverse provinces, home to more than two dozen officially recognised ethnic groups. That mix shows up in the food, festivals, village architecture and weekly markets — not as a performance for tourists, but as daily life.

Good to know
Altitude varies sharply. Northern Yunnan (Shangri-La, Deqin) sits above 3,000m, while the south is hot and humid. Pack layers and plan an acclimatisation day if you're heading high.
