Guizhou is a karst plateau of terraced hills, misty valleys and fast-flowing rivers. It gets far fewer visitors than its neighbours, which is exactly why it works for people who want rural China without the crowds.

The province is home to large Miao and Dong communities, whose wooden villages, festivals and textile traditions are still part of daily life. Add waterfalls, caves and cool summer weather and you have a strong case for slowing down.
